Where to stay for a night out

In short

Stay where the night you actually want begins. Sol or Huertas if you will use Joy and Kapital and want to walk. Malasaña or Chueca if the point is bars. Salamanca or Chamberí if you will taxi to a smarter club and you want to sleep. The metro closes around 1:30am, so ‘near a station’ stops mattering at the exact hour clubs fill.

Sol / HuertasFirst night, Joy, Kapital, walkingYou need quiet sleep
MalasañaBar-hopping, ThursdayYou wanted a megaclub downstairs
ChuecaLGBTQ+ nights, Barceló, MondoYou wanted Salamanca door policy
La LatinaDinner, ShôkoYou go out past 3am every night
SalamancaTaxis to Gunilla, Gabana, a calmer morningYou refuse to pay for cabs

Aparthotels on a nightlife street are cheaper for a reason. If the listing is on Atocha beside Kapital or above a Malasaña bar, budget for earplugs or budget for a different street.

Questions people ask

What is the best neighbourhood to stay in for nightlife?

For most first trips, Sol or Huertas. You can walk to the obvious clubs and you will not depend on a taxi until you are tired. Switch to Malasaña or Chueca if clubs are not the point.

Should I stay near the Bernabéu for the new clubs?

Only if those north-side rooms are the plan. You will cab back every night. A first-timer who stays in Tetuán to be ‘near nightlife’ usually wanted Sol.
